Well over 80% of the worlds refugee populations are women and children.  Women makeup 55% of the refugees accepted in to the United States.  The Alliance for African Assistance (AAA) grassroots program strives to become an even stronger promoter of the health and well being of women and children refugees.  Often women and children refugees have no voice in decisions affecting their lives.  The  Alliance  for African  Assistance,  a non-profit organization,  started the Department  of  Women and  Children

Advocacy Program to improve the lives of these refugees and help single mothers in San Diego.

Having already met our program milestones and objectives during this fiscal period the Alliance continues to gain   insight from its grassroots experience. The lessons learned will enable us to improve upon this program and make it an even stronger promoter of the health and well being of our women and children refugee clients. Well over 80% of the world refugee populations are women and children. 55% of the refugees excepted in to the US are women.

These are women who have no voice in decisions affecting the lives of their children and themselves. The Alliance for African Assistance is a non- profit organization was a start to advocate for women and children’s voices, which also created the Department of Women and Children especially to bettering the lives of single mothers in San Diego.

The need to help mothers in the community of San Diego has become critical.  As a non-profit organization we found this department to be highly essential and required for the future progression of this community.  It is our mission to ensure that the unique needs of refugee and to assist theses individuals and single held families to better themselves for their children future and that of San Diego.

The future of women and children started with assistance of First 5 California; with their assistantship to implement “Talk, Read/Tell story, and Play” for these refugee mothers become less difficult.  With some knowledge and awareness of their new country, they can do well for themselves and their children. The efforts to help themselves and their children became clear. We will continue to struggle to better ourselves, as will our clients.

Furthermore, with hour home visits, assistantship to medical facilities, and the many different work and educational training we have created a bond between our clients and ourselves.  Our clients have become strong and self- confident individual within their own communities.  In addition, they themselves have seen that refugee women and children is a keystone to their future.  First 5 California program has bridged the gap we could not do by ourselves.

                                      Single Parent Family

Helping single mothers in the San Diego community has become a vital passion.  It is our mission to ensure that the unique needs of women and children refugees, especially single parent families, be given the support to better their circumstances and provide a better future for their children which in-turn provides a better future for San Diego

                                  First 5 California

The AAA is allied with First 5 California.  This organization provides a program called “Talk, Read, Tell stories, and Play."   Education for refugees becomes less difficult through this amazing program.  The program provides knowledge and awareness of their new countries laws, culture, and systems. First 5 California has helped bridge the gap between accomplishment and despondency for many women and children refugees.  Our partnership with them is indispensable.

The Alliance cherishes the bond that exists between our clients and us.  Many clients have become strong and self-confident individuals within their own communities.  Refugee women and children are given a voice and the tools to control their own future and contribute positively to San Diego’s future.

                                Education Programs

There are many excellent resources for refugees to improve their skills and English language abilities. The community college system is very pro-active in providing vocational training in various skills including English. There are also both private and public English Second Language (ESL) programs available. Refugees resettled in San Diego will have access to Mid City English Language, El Cajon Valley High School, Job cord, Computer Training, ROP, Mid City and Mid City Adult education.

                                   Learning Center

The Alliance for African Assistance (AAA) provides high-quality tutoring to refugee children through a partnership with the Learning Center (40 hours reading).  The learning center is located at our San Diego office.  They charge only minimum fees for their services.  AAA provides scholarships for our clients through generous donations and grants we receive. Children are taught to read and write in their own language.  They are educated on proper nutrition  and receive  cultural  lessons about holidays  and  celebrations. The  after  school

program  provides  children  help  with their homework three times a week. The program is run by volunteers and is designed to tutor students in Math, English and Science. A weekly culture and customs class has been added on Saturdays.
